Arthur Gethin Creagh Sealed Ricketts Patent Wine Bottle Ireland

A fine pictorial sealed wine bottle attributed to Arthur Gethin Creagh Esq of Bally Andrew County Cork Ireland. Little was known about this seal when a hoard was found back in the 1970,s except it came from Ireland. After much research I can confirm the family and unusual style of font used on the seal is shown in a book called Heraldic Illustrations by J&JB Burke Volume 3. In it the family crest is described as such, “A horses head fully caparisoned with a laurel branch in the head stall of the bridle.” The book goes on to account that the crest was commissioned in honour of a battle against the invading Danish(Vikings)on the Limerick peninsula where they were driven back and the citizens placed green boughs in the head stalls off there deliverers horses. ¬†Height 11 inches, width 3 inches. A couple of light scratches and one minuscule chip on the top rim otherwise in good cellar found condition. Marked with the Ricketts patent mark on the shoulder. C1820/30
