Antique Glass Mallet Wine Bottle Catesby House Ashby St Ledgers Northamptonshire
Squat sealed mallet bottle with impressed Mythical Lion with bird feet. Another example of this seal is known on a Octagonal form bottle and is dated 1739. Both bottles have a gently struck seal. Old label to back of bottle with possible attribution mentions it as being found in the cellars of Catesby House, Ashby St Ledgers in Northamptonshire. Judging from my investigations regarding the area and label wording it seems to be more likely that it came from the Manor House which was owned by the Catesby family although the house was bought by a London Draper Joseph Ashley in 1703 and held until the end of that century where this bottles date would fall into. Also mentions the Gunpowder pot where this house was the original meeting place for discussions by the conspirators! Two star cracks in back of body and tiny potstone chip on front shoulder. C1740/50 Height 8 inches, width 5.5 inches.
