Antique Black Country Saltglaze Stoneware Flask Walsall Dragon Inn 1827
Exceptional folk art stoneware flask inscribed James Hyde Draggon Inn Walsall March the 14, 1827. The Dragon inn or The Black Country Arms as its known today has a rich history in this Midlands town and dates back to 1627. It was also known as the Green Dragon Inn and it is interesting to note that this flask is spelt incorrectly with Dragon having two G,s. For a full history on the Inn please Google The History of the Black Country Arms. The glaze is richly applied and has a Brampton or Nottingham feel to it although the exact potter may never be known. No doubt a “one off ” flask so a very rare historical item. No chips, cracks or restoration. Just over 6 inches tall by 5 inches wide. C1827.
