Rare Advertising Pottery Jug Ale Spirits Measure 1826
In 1824 Parliament changed the way imperial units were measured with a bill to standardise the way all liquids would be sold. The Weights & Measures Act was passed in 1826 and this jug is a very early advertising piece for a 1 PINT measure. A tin strap is wrapped around the handle with 1Pt stamped. Height 5.5 inches, width 6 inches. Sparrow beak pouring lip with loop handle. The glaze to the pottery is a light speckled creamware. Apart from a few tiny fleabite nibbles on the lip and rim (repaired) this jug is in great condition. Unmarked. C1826.
