English Saltglaze Stoneware Tobacconist Storage Jar

A rare survivor! Here we have an originally decorated jar used in a mid 18th century tobacconist shop. Known as Decalcomania this technique is done using paper scraps stuck to a wash of gesso. Lovely original wooden lid with acorn finial (minor chip). The inside came with original tobacco contents and still smells (now emptied). Height 12 inches. Someone has scrapped back a small part of the jar to reveal the orange peel Saltglaze finish. English c 1750/60.
